Certified by PICG, and an honorary faculty member of the Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance, Badaruddin Vellani is a practicing advocate in Karachi and a partner at the law firm Vellani & Vellani Associates since 1984.
Work And Experience
His legal practice is mostly concentrated on commercial matters, including corporate work, mergers, demerger, reconstructions, acquisitions, disinvestments, anti-trust matters and monopolies, corporate finance, project finance, infrastructure projects, building and construction contracts, taxation, as well as litigations in courts, including the Supreme Court. In addition to his general legal practice, he advises on industrial property and intellectual matters including registration assignment and licensing of patents, trademarks, copyrights and Domain Names, unfair competition licensing and franchising, and litigation in each of these specialized areas of work. Mr. Villani’s countless services in the legal practice speak for his rich experience. Previously, Mr. Villani was the chairman of a group working to set up a legal information foundation. He also chaired a project funded by the Asia Foundation for making the country’s laws and regulations and the decisions of the Courts in Pakistan available through the electronic media including via the internet. He has served as a consultant on an Asian Development Bank sponsored project carried out by the Asia Foundation for the Government of Pakistan on Pakistan Legal and Judicial Reforms. He also participated in a Symposium organized and held in Manila in September 1999 by the Asian Development Bank on Secured Transactions Law Reforms. Mr. Vellani was one of the earliest members of the interim Trustee of Habib University (2010- 2012) and was involved in the setting up of the University and the drafting of its Charter. Mr. Villani also served as a member of various legal institutions and councils. He was the Jurisdictional Member on the Council of the Inter Pacific Bar Association representing Pakistan, a Legal Member on the National Council for Pakistan from 2005 to 2006, and a member of the ICC Court of Arbitration representing Pakistan. AT PRESENT Presently, Mr. Villani is a member of The General Council of the Bar, Pakistan Industrial and Intellectual Property Association, the Asian Patent and Attorneys Association, the Pakistan National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Task Force on Tax Administration. He also serves as a member of the board of directors of Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited, Shell Pakistan Limited, Wyeth Pakistan Limited, Novartis Parma (Pakistan) Limited, Roche Pakistan Limited and Esso Pakistan (Private) Limited. Mr. Vellani is also a member of the Audit Committee in Shell Pakistan Limited, Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited and Wyeth Pakistan Limited, and a part of the HR&R Committees of the latter two. As part of his philanthropic work, Mr. Vellani is also a member on the Board of Governors of Hisaar Foundation (a not for profit foundation for water, food and livelihood security), and Vice Chairman of the Board of the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy. Mr. Vellani has also contributed extensively of his time and knowledge to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), not only as a volunteer but also as Chairman of the National Committee of the Aga Khan University Foundation Pakistan (since July 2006). He is currently the President and CEO of the Governing Body of the Aga Khan Hospital Medical College Foundation since April 2016, and was also appointed to the AKU Board of Trustees on 24th April 2020. Apart from that, Mr. Vellani is also a member of the Advisory Committee Constituted by the Board of Directors of Development Corporation Pakistan Advisers (Private) Limited and parent Company Commonwealth Development Corporation, United Kingdom.
